Celebrating the hidden talents of our care home residents and care team colleagues #Winter #Warmers

Today we are looking back at a special initiative led by carehome.co.uk – Care Home Idol.

Activities such as singing and dancing have a positive effect on both our physical and mental well-being. Care Home Idol encourages us all to get moving and showcase our talents!

2016 was the fourth year of the competition, which is designed to showcase the talent and vibrancy of care homes, and to challenge people’s misconceptions of care home life.

Contestants comprised of residents and care team members from across the country and the winner was chosen by Sylvie Silver, Director of National Activity Providers Association.

One of the entries was our very own Lee and Pat from Wansbeck Care Home in Northumberland, who were declared one of three runners up in the competition.

The video shows our colleague Lee Holdroyd dancing with resident Pat to the Monkees’ song ‘Daydream Believer’ and it truly tugs at the heartstrings.

Lee started dancing with 86-year-old Pat one evening, after she felt a bit down and restless as he knew how much she loved to sing and dance. A colleague saw the spontaneous singalong and captured it on film.

Wansbeck Care Home posted the heart-warming video on their Facebook page and within days it went viral and was watched by thousands of people all around the world.

The video, with the help of social media, also sparked a family reunion - Pat's brother Ron, who had not seen her since moving to Canada after the war almost 70 years ago, was shown the video by his family who noticed it on Facebook and got in touch to say how proud he was.

Wansbeck’s Home Manager said: “Pat is always the life and soul of any party in the home and she loves to sing and dance. What Lee did was a spontaneous and beautiful thing, which is typical of him, although neither of them understand why the video has attracted so much attention and been shared so many times. It is the sort of thing that we do in this home. “

The video even attracted the attention of ITV's Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield who interviewed Lee live on This Morning (Wednesday 14th September 2016).

This is just one amazing example of what goes on in care homes across the country every day. All of the competition entries celebrate care home life and highlight the close-knit relationships that form in a care home – you are all winners to us!

Care homes are bursting with talented older people who have led diverse and fascinating lives. A competition like Care home Idol gives them an opportunity to showcase their skills and talents – no matter what they may be.

Care Home Idol is back in 2018, we can’t wait to see what next year brings!
